Direction matters more than price

Place the main light slightly above eye level and point it toward the subject. Avoid relying only on a ceiling light, which creates deep shadows under the eyes and nose.

• ✓Face a window instead of standing with it behind you.
• ✓Use a sheer curtain to soften direct sunlight.
• ✓Turn off lamps with strongly mismatched color temperatures.

Bounce the light

A white wall, white card, or light-colored cloth can reflect light into the darker side of a face. Place it opposite the main light, close enough to help but outside the camera frame.

Test before the event

Run a complete test session at the same time of day as the event. Check whether faces are overexposed, the background is distracting, or exposure changes sharply when people enter the frame.
